Most venture studios are built for speed – a few months, a demo day, and you’re on your own.

But startups don’t grow in three-month sprints, they grow in seasons – through pivots, rebuilds, breakthroughs, and late-night calls no one sees.

That’s why we built Epipelagic Ventures, a venture studio for founders who need more than a check or a crash course. Our mission is to provide long-term partnerships and hands-on support for founders navigating their most defining stages.

The goal is presence – to be there when you need a mentor most. We’ve designed a venture studio that reflects this reality.

But how does Epipelagic Ventures work, and what’s in it for the founders? In this article, we’ll introduce the key factors you need to know about our venture studio and share recommendations for potential partners.

The Problem with "Programs"

Imagine if you had 12 months with your dream mentor where you could ask any question about scaling your business, 12 months of partnership with advisors who have been through the ups and downs of beginning a company, and the knowledge that you no longer need to weather the startup storms on your own.

Not only would you grow faster than founders without mentorship, you could excel with confidence and clarity.

That is the value of the venture studio model, a funding source that delivers mentorship in addition to investment. Venture studios go beyond the traditional funding model, where startups often just receive a check. Epipelagic Ventures not only invests capital, but partners with founders to expand their network and business acumen.

Who Is Epipelagic Ventures?

who is epipelagic ventures

Epipelagic Ventures is a Massachusetts-based venture studio that does so much more than provide capital. We’re inspired by our surroundings, headquartered in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, arguably the densest innovation ecosystem in the world. Our neighbors are Massachusetts Institute of Technology and roughly 2,000 startups.

Deeply ingrained in the startup culture of Kendall Square, we’re passionate about Boston’s next best business. Our mantra is simple: capital helps you start, but systems help you scale. We combine financial backing with technical, operational, and marketing support to help founders move from traction to transformation.

We build alongside founders, providing:

  • Technical infrastructure: Product strategy, data support, and scalable systems.
  • Go-to-market strategy and marketing: From positioning and messaging to demand generation.
  • Operational frameworks: The financial discipline and systems that make scaling possible.
  • Capital: Structured to support your early runway and prepare for future fundraising.
  • Mentorship: Guidance from seasoned operators and investors who have scaled companies before.

I want founders in our program to be a little selfish when it comes to the time they spend with us.

How Our Venture Studio Works

If guidance is capped at only a few weeks, founders may return to their business with an overload of best practices without a clear strategy to implement any of them. After years of evaluating startups, we’ve heard from founders who wished for more mentorship and guidance through the more difficult phases of their business.

The evolution of a startup never ends, but we’ve found that the sweet spot for effective development takes place within the first two years. That’s why we’ve built a venture studio ecosystem that nurtures startups for a 12- to 18-month engagement.

Founders get the range of developmental benefits crucial for the early stages of business formation, but for a longer period of time.

Plus, there is more flexibility for founders to explore unfamiliar territory, challenge themselves, and try unorthodox ideas without the pressure of figuring it all out within the space of a few weeks.

Yet, there is a commitment to efficiency and squeezing the most value out of our mentors. Louis Leblanc, Head of Investments at Epipelagic Ventures, said during an interview, “A lot of people can give you money, but not everyone will take the time to guide you through ups and downs of business, or go into the finer details of building a website or creating an MVP. I want founders in our program to be a little selfish when it comes to the time they spend with us.”

What We Look for in Founders

We’re selective, not because we want to gatekeep, but because partnership only works when values align.

Beyond a great idea, we’re scanning founders for the qualities that make them an exceptional leader. Benson Chang, Managing Partner at Epipelagic Ventures, stated that 50% of a businesses’ success leans on specific character traits of the founder.

Ideas are abundant, but the founder’s ability to build a business, adapt to uncertainty, and maintain a learner-first mentality is the true differentiator.

Through years of partnering with early-stage entrepreneurs, our advisory team narrowed down the three personality traits that they believe are crucial for founder success:

Benson: Driven, reasonable, dedicated

Janani: Receptive, motivated, precise

Erin: Coachable, ambitious, flexible

Johnny: Gritty, adaptable, savvy

Louis: Experienced, character-driven, passionate

Notice what’s missing?

Raw intellect or pedigree. Those matter less than resilience and character. We look for founders who balance urgency with patience; people who can both take feedback and hold a strong vision.

No matter what your circumstances in life are, having access to a good education can change your world.

Where We Invest

Great advancements happen in a niche space. We invest in sectors shaping how people live, learn, and grow, and focus on industries where purpose and potential align. Rather than spread ourselves thin across every possible industry, we focus on where we see outsized impact.

Our early partnerships with Knovva Consulting and Knovva Foundation deepened our belief that education and human development are an integral part of nearly all industries.

Erin Seo, Chief Marketing Advisor at Epipelagic Ventures, stated why she’s so passionate about the education sector. “Education is not just a good investment; it’s in my heart. No matter what your circumstances in life are, having access to a good education can change your world.”

Here are the spaces Epipelagic Ventures is most excited about:

  • EdTech: Companies redefining how knowledge is shared and acquired, from K-12 to lifelong learning.
  • Health and Wellness: Innovations that improve quality of life, whether through technology, services, or consumer products.
  • Consumer: Brands that resonate with shifting consumer values, from sustainability to personalization.
  • Moonshots: High-risk, high-reward bets on the frontier of what’s possible.

What Happens After You Join

You are now part of the venture studio – what happens next? Founders gain a dedicated cross-functional team that supports product development, marketing, tech, and operations. Over 12 to 18 months, we help you achieve measurable traction and prepare for future rounds with clarity and confidence.

We aim to meet startups where they are, which means that the venture studio tailors to the individual needs of each startup. We’ve had specific instances where startups were in the MVP building process, and we helped them reach the finish line. In other cases, we’ve partnered with startups with an existing MVP and laid the foundation for the perfect go-to-market strategy.

A lot can happen in the span of 18 months. Our goal is to act like an extension of the internal team. Here’s a snapshot of what founders gain:

Extended runway: Long-term support to hit key milestones before fundraising

Tailored milestones: KPIs aligned with your unique growth journey

Fundraising prep: Pitch strategy, investor intros, and deal guidance

Operational support: Hiring, finance, and compliance systems that scale

Community: A network of founders and mentors ready to collaborate

The Epipelagic Ventures Model: Built for Durability

Traditional studios optimize for speed. While that’s great for some startups, these programs aren’t around for the hurdles of an expanding business.

We optimize for durability. By the time you’re in front of Series A investors, you’ve de-risked your model, validated your market, and built momentum worth betting on.

Our mission is to turn early momentum into lasting impact, walking alongside as partners who build with you.
