How Robo Wunderkind and Epipelagic Ventures Are <span style="color: #2e74ff;">Shaping&nbsp;the Future of EdTech</span>

When Anna Iarotska, recipient of the Spark Award for Female Founders, reflects on her childhood, she recalls a time when coding and robotics were relegated to a “boys’ club.” Anna never envisioned herself in technology. “It just didn’t feel like it was for me,” she admitted.

That changed in 2014 when she found herself surrounded by startups building satellites, web platforms, and robotics at a technology conference. “It was eye opening. I realized technology was so much more than sitting behind a computer. These people were building the future,” she said.

That realization sparked the idea for Robo Wunderkind, the Epipelagic Ventures-backed EdTech company that brings playful, approachable robotics into K-5 classrooms. Her mission: ensure every child, regardless of background, sees themselves as capable of engaging with (and even creating) world-changing technology.

Imagination Starts with Visibility

In the early MVP stages, Anna noticed a telling pattern. When she asked K-5 students what they wanted to be when they grew up, many answered “horse trainer” while few mentioned abstract roles, like scientists or engineers.

Students who spend time around animals may envision a career working with them. At that age, it’s hard to imagine the possibility of a profession when you have no frame of reference.

It wasn’t that they weren’t curious,” she explained. “You just can’t imagine yourself becoming something you’ve never seen.

Robo Wunderkind was designed to bridge that gap. Unlike robotics kits that lean on intimidating designs, Robo Wunderkind’s modular robots are colorful, friendly, and simple enough for a five-year-old to build and program. “The idea was to make robotics accessible, almost like LEGO, but with a brain,” Iarotska said.

Robo Wunderkind’s approachable design gave kids a reference point. Epipelagic Ventures helped extend that visibility by reshaping their messaging so educators and funders saw Robo Wunderkind as a leader in AI literacy, not just a toy company.

From Kickstarter to Classrooms

In 2015, Robo Wunderkind launched on Kickstarter, raising over $250,000 in just a few weeks and quickly gaining traction with parents and schools.

But as the company grew, a challenge emerged: while the product was designed to teach coding and robotics, its brand often came across more like a toy than a serious education partner. That perception gap – beloved toy vs. trusted curriculum partner – is one many EdTech startups face when scaling from consumer enthusiasm to institutional adoption.

This challenge marked a turning point for Robo Wunderkind, making it harder to convert leads, close sales to schools, and scale as an EdTech leader.

Robo Wunderkind Shape the Future

Enter Epipelagic Ventures (2025)

By 2025, Robo Wunderkind had established a strong foothold in U.S. classrooms, but needed a sharper identity and go-to-market strategy to unlock its next growth stage. Recognizing that Robo Wunderkind could benefit from deeper strategic and operational support, their investor LearnLaunch partnered with Epipelagic Ventures to extend the value of the studio model to the team. Together, we leveraged capital, expertise, and execution in order to accelerate their growth.

Anna wasn’t just looking for capital; she wanted partners who understand the complexities of EdTech and could collaborate across networks to refine Robo Wunderkind’s story, brand, and sales engine.

Our partnership went beyond funding; we embedded marketing, product, and technology teams into Robo Wunderkind’s core operations, built scalable systems, and refined their narrative as a K-5 AI education leader.

That vision aligned perfectly with Epipelagic Venture’s mission: backing founders with systems, not just capital. With both operational and technical teams embedded, Robo Wunderkind gained the foundation to scale with confidence.

Beyond Coding: Building AI Literacy

While Robo Wunderkind began as an entry point into coding, its scope has expanded with the rise of artificial intelligence. Anna emphasizes that this is a natural extension to their existing curriculum.

“Robotics and coding are tools, not ends in themselves. What matters is developing skills like problem-solving, computational thinking, and creativity,” she explained. “AI is now part of that skill set. Kids shouldn’t just use AI, they should understand how it works, and imagine themselves as creators with it.”

AI is now part of that skill set. Kids shouldn’t just use AI, they should understand how it works, and imagine themselves as creators with it.

Robo Wunderkind’s AI Literacy Curriculum now helps K-5 teachers introduce concepts like data, algorithms, and bias not through abstract lectures, but through tangible play.

To prepare for this shift, Epipelagic Ventures built the go-to-market strategy for Robo Wunderkind’s AI literacy curriculum by designing content frameworks, funnels, and campaigns that educators could trust.

Robo Wunderkind walked away from their studio engagement with a new messaging framework and brand recognition plan that repositioned them from toy makers to EdTech leaders across targeted channels.

Mathias Kutschera, Head of Growth at Robo Wunderkind, noted that through the bolstering of marketing, the internal sales team exhibited a stronger sense of product knowledge and brand consistency.

Why We Backed Robo Wunderkind

Being a female founder in robotics, Anna found that her journey has been a unique one. Following her sense of pioneership, her next goal is expanding AI literacy to all early learners.

This is why Epipelagic Ventures exists: to pair visionary founders with the operational muscle to scale faster. With Robo Wunderkind, we embedded systems that propelled their public view from toy company to a recognizable AI literacy brand.

At Epipelagic Ventures, we believe AI literacy for every child is a cornerstone of the future. Startups like Robo Wunderkind are making it possible. If you’re building solutions that empower the next generation of learners, we’d love to explore how Epipelagic Ventures can help you scale your impact.
